You’ve spent a little time in Chicago at Lolla the last few years. What do you remember about those experiences?
That’s a good question. [Laughs]Foggy weekends?
Yeah. I remember the weather being pretty damn good and walking away from this city and being like, “This is the greatest city on earth.” And my buddy who lives here he’s like, “[Bleep] you; come here in the winter.” We had a good time at Lollapalooza. Will you be back this year?
I don’t think I can make it this year, but last year won’t be my last one.The headliners are weak; this is the year to miss.
Is it really? Who are the headliners this year?Vampire Weekend, who has been here. The Killers, who have been here twice. The National, who I like, but is too depressing for a headliner.
I hear ya, I hear ya. Have you seen the National live, though?
I have.
They get into it. I know what you’re saying, though. I get what you’re saying.I have bands like the National that I like but that I never want to listen to.
[Laughs] Who else is on that list?I used to feel that way about Foo Fighters. “The Colour and the Shape” I can go back to though.
I don’t know if I know them. No, that’s the Foo Fighters album with “My Hero,” “Monkey Wrench.”
Oh, oh, OK OK. Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha.Who have you listened to the most lately?
It’s funny you say these bands because the two [most] recent albums I’ve purchased are the Vampire Weekend and the National’s new album. Who else have I been listening to? Do you know Charles Bradley?I do. He will be at Lolla; that’s one of the highlights.
Oh yeah? That’s cool, that’s cool. Do you listen to Laura Marling ever?Yeah.
I haven’t been able to dive into her new one yet, but I just bought that, listened to a couple tracks. It’s good. What else are you listening to?I’ve been listening to the new Paramore a lot. They don’t get as much credit as they should.
Oh yeah? Tell me about them, ‘cause I don’t know really much about them. The writing on the new record’s really good. It’s easy to write off stuff like that, but it’s really solid.
Are they recently gaining more credibility or have they [always had that], in terms of someone like you liking them?Their last album was about, “I can’t believe we’re still a band; we almost broke up.” This one has more to say about growing up.
